Amy and Roger's Epic Detour by Morgan Matson

4/5 Stars

B&N:

Amy Curry thinks her life sucks. Her mom decides to move from California to Connecticut to start anew--just in time for Amy's senior year. Her dad recently died in a car accident. So Amy embarks on a road trip to escape from it all, driving cross-country from the home she's always known toward her new life. Joining Amy on the road trip is Roger, the son of Amy's mother's old friend. Amy hasn’t seen him in years, and she is less than thrilled to be driving across the country with a guy she barely knows. So she's surprised to find that she is developing a crush on him. At the same time, she’s coming to terms with her father’s death and how to put her own life back together after the accident. Told in traditional narrative as well as scraps from the road--diner napkins, motel receipts, postcards--this is the story of one girl's journey to find herself.

My Review:

This book was very well written. The characters were developed so well that you really could feel what they were feeling. Amy and Roger are so like-able. Roger is just a nice guy who you really can't help having a crush on right along with Amy's character. The author does an amazing job taking us on the journal across the USA along with these two. They are both learning things about themselves and each other. There are funny parts, cute parts, and parts that just pull on your heart strings. Seeing what this young girl goes through after her father dies really got to me. The author also did a great job using flashbacks to help move the story along letting us see things that happened for ourselves rather than the main character just telling us what happened.

I'm hoping to pick up a copy for my classroom because I think middle school and high school kids would really like it. (No graphic sex scenes!--yay!)
